Calvert Cliffs State Park

For a unique outdoor destination, look no further than Calvert Cliffs State Park, located just 80 miles from Baltimore. The park features a 0.25-mile beach that's surrounded by dramatic cliffs that are rich with prehistoric fossils. This park is open for day use but charges a $5 per night fee for camping. If you want to camp for the weekend, a campground is located just north of the park.



Located along the Chesapeake Bay, this park is home to a tiny sandy beach and is perfect for swimming. Calvert Cliffs is also a great place to do so if you're into fossil hunting. This park also has a 200-foot fishing pier, so don't be afraid to bring a camera! The park also offers day-use picnic areas and seasonal campsites with water and sewage services.

Point Lookout State Park

For a day on the beach, visit Point Lookout, State Park. This beach has a full-service bathhouse, a park store, and parking nearby. Tables are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis, and there are plenty of opportunities to relax. Point Lookout State Park is near the city, making it easy to pack a day's worth of activities.



The state park extends into the broad waters of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. This area was a prison for Confederate soldiers during the War of 1812. In the early 19th century, it was used by local militia as a watchpoint. Now, you can enjoy the beach while learning about its history. The lighthouse stands as a reminder of this area's past.

Matapeake Park and Beach

The park is free to enter but does charge for parking (three dollars for Maryland residents and five dollars for non-residents). Parking is limited and there are no facilities for wheelchairs or trailers. Guests can bring their pets, but dogs must be leashed on a leash.

Rocky Gap State Park

The park features the beautiful Lake Habeeb, a 243-acre artificial lake, and several miles of hiking trails. Check out the Rocky Gap Casino Resort and golf course if you're in the area. There are interpretive activities and 14 mini cabins for rent.

This beach in Allegany County is home to many different species of birds. The Rocky Gap area has two hundred and forty-five species of birds on eBird. It is noted for attracting rare species of birds that are difficult to find in other areas of Allegany County. Ruddy Ducks are often seen here and can be found early in the winter. You'll find shallow waters at this beach, accessible from the Trolley Pavilion. You'll also find picnic areas, fishing, and biking trails here. During the summer, free movie nights and fireworks shows take place at the beach. Sundaes in the Park are also fun to spend the evening in the park.
